What do you think is the lightest bitless?

I mean, the bitless bridle that has the least effect on the horses face when you are not using the reins? I used to ride in a rope halter but found it weighed heavy on the nose all the time because of the knot underneath. Now I am in a bosal which is MUCH better as it barely touches the face when not in actual use, But I want to go lighter still. Any suggestions? (Not counting no bridle at all )

How about a rope halter made of lighter rope? I made rope halters and do clinics on how to make them a few times of the year and I often get requests for the lightest rope possible.

Do you mean it's heavy on the horses face or it makes your reins feel heavy?

Interesting question, I was wondering about something similar recently and that is - which BB is the kindest. But I'm sure everyone has their own ideas on that and sometimes it depends on what the horse prefers anyway.

I sometimes think that the things that look and feel light aren't as kind as I would like. I tried the Parelli thing of riding in a rope halter with the reins under the chin but when i got off, the nose bit had embedded itself into the hair on his face... So I didn't like that.

I tried making a rope halter with cotton rope, it was thicker but still light. But it stretched a bit so I didn't pursue it. I should try it again though - just fiddle with the design a bit.

The bridle I school in is a sidepull, the noseband of which I pad thickly with memory foam and a sheepskin cover. So it looks bulky but when I put my hands under it and pull on the reins it's like being squeezed by a cushion! So although it looks heavy it's very kind.

Ooh i've never seen a bridle with a memory foam noseband. Where did you get it/what kind is it?

Oh it's just a home made pad I'm fiddling with the design to try and get it really neat but (hopefully) immoveable!

Thanks guys but thats not quite what I mean. I mean a bridle that the horse barely even knows it's there until you use the reins. A rope halter hangs on the horses nose with a weight even when you have the reins loose. A Dr Cooks has quite a bulky noseband which is quite stiff, and a bosal even though it has no effect on the nose when the reins are loose, is also stiff and a bit bulky. I'm not talking about the kindest bridle, that depends on the rider anyhow, I want to find one that is practically non-existent! The problem seems to be the weight of the reins themselves.

Yeah I would say try going with a different pair of reins. I think the answer is probably the rope halter with lighter reins. Why were you wanting a very light bridle? Try using thin cotton reins. I have a pair that I braided and they tie onto things using a terminal turks head knot. They are light but get dirty real easy since they are white cotton.

I would have to say the enduro would be the lightest,
lightweight rope, padded noseband so no embedding into the nose and the subtlest and lightest action of any BBs I have come across.
Just a tiny little cue on the back of the jaw.
