OK I just went mad and have arranged to buy my mates foal. a Welsh Section D filly. I will probably have her when she is a yearling but until then I have access to her to play with her. Anybody got any suggestions of good things I can do? Unfortunately there is nowhere where my friend lives where I can take mare and foal out, we have to stay in the field. She already leads and picks up her feet. She is 2 months old now. She's had a blanket all over her and ropes and stuff dropped from her back ...

Hello. I am from Latvia, and my horse is kind of a mixed blood Latvian Warmblood gelding, currently four years of age (and a half).

I started riding when I was quite small, but not very seriously. Always dreamed of a horse, but never though I could really have one. And then, on my 16th birthday I got the best present ever - a nice, kind of rideable, darker chestnut mare. Happy was the summer I spent training with her over jumps, and riding in the woods and then... either something in her not-so-very-happy ...

Hi Everyone,

I would like to extend a personal invitation for you to contribute your advice and reach many others who are on this journey with horses.

Do you have some horse training or horse care advice that would help others? Maybe you have a success story about the best natural method for caring for a horse that you would like to pass on. Or maybe you were at your wits ends and along came the ”best” piece of advice someone offered you that really helped! (Like going Bitless! ) Or how ...

It still hurts to think or talk about it but I had to euthanise my old mare, Naigen today. She got a twisted bowel and there was nothing at her age that we could do.

Someone once said to me, the most lonely feeling in the world is having to eithanise a horse. I couldn't agree more.

Well, I have taken the first step in seeing if I can help the cause of allowing bitless in competition. I am going to start by asking our provinicial horse federation to listen to our request of a rule change. I have posted my arguement on a local forum that I am on, so I will see what kind of support I get. I am also in the process of creating a draft presentation to take to my riding club to see if they would support me as well. I figure if I could get the local clubs to help/support, I ...

I was not sure where to put this question, but I believe that this would be the right place...

I love riding bareback, but I'm pretty convinced that riding this way is worse to the horse than riding with a saddle..

...unless you have a correct seat and are truly balanced, you can do more harm to the horses back - because when you sit bareback on a horse, the pressure from your weight is directly on the horses back, not dispersed [correct term?] with the help of a saddle (more pressure ...

For me it was down to Trelawny's size and growth - he is a BIG horse, and still growing and a treeless saddle will grow with him and I bought a Barefoot Nevada because I like the western saddles (watched too many westerns as a kid!) Dancing is getting a bit resistant on turns and a bosal isn't the best thing to correct this with and anything that tightens she won't like.

on the subject of crossovers - I saw a real instrument of torture today when I went out on a pleasure ride with Kitty. It can't have been much pleasure for this horse or his rider. The horse was wearing one ...

Hi all, I've recently signed up after giving a lot of thought to going bitless with my horse. I've tried nearly a dozen different bits and no matter who rides him, his tongue just hangs out, he grabs the bit and off he goes.

The only thing is, I'm not sure how much I trust myself and his training. I've only had him six months and in that time he's twice gone into a panicky gallop on the trail. Granted, that was in our first month together and since then our bond is growing and he's easier to ...

Ok so two weeks ago I went to this clinic. The clinic was for these shoes. Now I'll tell you a few things about why I cannot go barefoot/use boots and obviously why I don't want to use traditional shoes.

Barefoot does not work for me in the warmer months because I drive my horses 5-7 days a week and a lot of the time that work is on rough, rocky or paved surfaces. Our paddock/pasture is very rocky and the barnyard has cement in it so the horses become very tender and worn down within a few ...

When I went out with another horse accompanying she walked a bit then just - took off at a gallop. go for a half mile, slow to a trot, gallop again, then walk, walk quietly with the other horse a bit then - take ...

Hypothetically speaking... ...if you had a horse that became VERY attached to another horse, so much so that said horse can only be ridden by the owner in the field with the other horse, would you keep them together, or separate them? Can a horse bond "too much" with another horse?

Have we discussed this bridle yet? I didn't read through all the posts to check. Someone brought this bridle to my attention, asking me about it, but I don't know anything about it except what I've read on his site. It is supposed to be designed from the 'inside', the anatomy of the horse's head. Any thoughts on it? It can be used as a bitless bridle, but I'm kind of lost on the "mild, medium, or strong" variations of it.

I recently found out that my horse is gaited, I am not very familiar with gaited horses and we don't get a lot of them around here, I always called it his funny trot.

He does the foxtrot and flatwalk. Since finding out what gait it was (it was very fast- 15 mph) I have managed to slow him down a lot and we are actually getting a decent gait now.

I ride him treeless and bitless, but find it a bit difficult to sit his foxtrot when out hacking sometimes, as he does like to go fast! Still working ...

I am going to start taking my youngster out more inhand with another horse ridden so she gets used to going out and about.

She hates any kind of pressure around her face, she is fine in a rope halter but anything that squeezes she doesn't like, she shakes her head and has tried to bite me (which is not like my girly at all)

I have rigged up an endurance bridle I have and taken the cheekpieces off so it is like a headcollar with a ring under the chin and a browband, would this be suitable ...

I have been wondering about my saddle lately. Not sure what to do.

I know that white hairs are an indication of an ill-fitting saddle. I hardly rode Fanny last year, yet she had the odd white hair on her (she also had a few white hairs on her back when I got her). She still has those white hairs, and I dare say there are more now. But they seem to be more on her left side than her right. Could it be because she's mounted from the left? I usually dismount on the right.

I've been concerned ...

He ordered a pair of hoof boots, and I won't mention what brand, but anyways, he put them on his horse, went for a ride and the horse over-reached and ripped the boot. I asked him if he had a warranty or guarantee on them and he did so now he is waiting ...

Think of ways we mask a horses senses.

When the particular sense is masked what does it overcome?

I've been thinking about a few in particular that come to mind.

Blinders: I use them, but I train my horse without them so they know exactly what is going on around them before I mask their ability to see. They can however still look around behind ...

Len just called me, he is planning to come to the UK again in 2009 in April. Clinics will be in Derby, South Wales and here in Somerset. Contact me if you want any information or you can ring Len (in the USA) on 00161 947 30091
Although he doesn't say 'all horses should be bitless', any horse trained with his help can easily be ridden bitless - he teaches you to ride the horse you've got, not the perfect horse you wish you had!
