Fly rugs/sweet itch rugs

Post by Jo on Wed Jul 14, 2010 6:53 am

Ok, Trelawny wears a fly rug in the summer, I am not 100% convinced he has sweet itch (if he does it is very mild), but he does get itchy and every fly in the vicinity seems to love him (whereas the ponies standing right next to him arent overly bothered at all). We have face flies, horse flies, deer flies and some really big and horrible blood suckers that are almost the size of a hornet. This makes him fairly irritable (pretty difficult for a chilled out Shire horse).
Question - he is a BIG horse - with a deep neck, wide chest etc. We have tried all kinds of fly rugs including Rambo, Shires plus others, two sweet itch rugs - the latest - a Boett cost me 200 - we were guaranteed that it wouldnt rub. Well it does, on his shoulders, and his bum - it is big enough, but the cut isnt quite right for him I guess. So where can I get a really really big and roomy fly rug, including neck cover (that is actually long enough when they stretch their necks down), that doesnt cost the earth and wont rub??

I'm sorry to hear that your gentle giant is being bothered so much! I don't know if this would give you any ideas, but here's a link I just found. It has pics of different types of sheets and rugs, and one looked really interesting for a large horse that may be hard to fit a regular sheet on. I don't know how effective it would be for no-see-ums though. Just trying to help. Once you get to the page, scroll down until you get to the pics of the different 'fabrics' used for sheets and rugs. The "webbing" one is the one I am thinking of. Unfortunately, they don't give a name or anything. I tried googling it, but came up empty. It looks like something a person could make themselves.

Have you tried preventing flies internally? Adding apple cider vinegar or wine vinegar to the water? Feeding garlic?

Hope you can find a solution for him.

I bought a sweet itch rug from a lady on Ebay called Cornerstone Browbands (I think), which was just as good as a Boett, made to measure etc. The only prob I had was that the elastic on the straps was a lot less durable than the Boett elastic, and the join between the belly piece and the main rug ripped off, but you could mention this to her and see if she's made any improvements. She lined parts she thought might rub, which Boett don't I think. I f you told her about your specific probs she might be able to work something out? She was also lots cheaper than Boett...

Found link;

Hope it helps!

cheers lightertouch - thats great!! He doesnt need a belly pan which makes life a lot easier - like I said I am not convinced he has sweet itch but the flies certainly drive him mad - all of them - and he does have very sensitive skin. Someone told me last night about a fly collar which I am also looking into.......
