BAREFOOT HORSES Empty BAREFOOT HORSES

Post by thebitlessway Fri Jan 14, 2011 7:36 pm

Hi all,
I have ALL my horses Barefoot Trimmed by a professional Barefoot Trimmer. In my area, we have many rocks, hills, hard ground, soft ground, you name it!
So horses have to have hard feet to prevent lameness. I can tell you this, since my horses have been Barefoot, I've had only about 2 lame horses(caused by stone bruise) in the past 2yrs!!! I go Trail Riding, Team Penning, riding on my gravel driveway and on concrete, with no trips, stumbles, lameness or anything! My horses are also much more balanced on their feet! You will find that most Shod horses get very lame often, stumble, etc. It doesn't help with the farriers trimming
off the horses TOES! Have a look at your horses feet and look for a White Line along the edge of each hoof. The white line is shaped with your horses foot and that line is your horses toes! So, you should be able to see all of that white line, if you can't and it's been trimmed off, it means that the farrier has trimmed way too far back! And this is very bad for your horses hooves! No farrier should trim behind or on the White Line of a hoof! So check that.
I'm saving up for some Barefoot lessons, so I can do it too! It does take longer to trim a barefoot horse then a trimmed horse, because they take more time on barefoot trimming, getting it nice and right!
I will be posting more info on Barefoot Horses soon!

BAREFOOT HORSES Empty Re: BAREFOOT HORSES

Hi Grace.

My horse is barefoot too - always has been. The last time my barefoot farrier was out, she said that if my mare had gravel or stones to walk on regularly, I wouldn't have to have the farrier come out at all anymore! The gravel would be just to keep the walls worn down, because the rest of her foot is otherwise wearing perfectly...and her feet are hard as iron. I'm thinking of buying a rasp and filing her hooves routinely to see if I can keep the walls down. I'll still have the farrier stop in to check on us though. It would be nice to not have to pay a farrier anymore because she drives two hours to come see us, so I have to pay a travel fee on top of the trim fee.

Hi Cyndi!
Yes, my horses feet are like IRON too!!!!! Smile WOW! That's a long way to come to Trim your horse!!! Smile My Barefoot Farriers only has to travel about 10mins!!! Smile A rasp I like is that Heller rasp! Perfect for Barefoot Trimming! They've got many styles! From Basic to Master! You can also purchase a Barefoot Sculptor for $88 Aus. Apparently, they're ALOT easier!! Smile And user friendly!
I get my horses feet trimmed for a special price of $25 per horse, instead of $40. Because my farrier charges me what the average farrier use to trim! And for Barefoot lessons, she charges $40 per lesson. My farrier also spends alot of time(approx. 1hr per horse) getting my horses feet PREFECT!! And 2 of my mares slightly turn in, with their front legs, but now no-one can notice!!! Smile
I love riding BAREFOOT!!!!! My horses love it more too! Smile
