Hello Tasha, I'm new as well and it is good be able to 'talk' to like-minded people. I'm very much an oddity at my yard, but I know my horse is happy and thats all that matters to me.

Welcome here Tasha!

You have seven horses of your own? How do you manage time with each of them? That question is to everyone else in here who has more than one horse. I'd love to get a second horse, but anyone I talk to always warns me that they are a lot of work, etc... But they also said that about one horse, and I hardly consider doing anything with Fanny as work!! Smile

Yes I have 7 of them, they can be a lot of work, especially mucking 7 of them out in winter, and doing a degree at the same time, but this year I have decided to leave them all out over winter, which should be much easier, they have stables to go in if they wish, but I am using an open plan design of the paddock paradise system for them, I tried a 'proper' paddock paradise system in the summer, but my horses were not respectful of the fences enough Rolling Eyes
Feeding will be hard this winter, but I have finally found some feed that keeps weight on my Ex racer, and if everyone behaves nicely they may all be able to eat, lol.

I love my horses, and don't know what I would do with myself with just the one! lol

I love the idea of the paddock paradise! Fanny is out 24/7 with a run-in, and it sure makes life easier, especially when you're away for a few days. I do clean out the run-in, but that's it (mind you, I'm cleaning up after five horses). Sure beats having to ask someone to muck a stall for me if I'm away (which is usually included in the price of board, but that's not always the case at the barn I'm at). Do you have your own property then? That would be so ideal. Then I could do whatever I wanted to in the paddock, i.e. logs to jump over, etc..

I'm hoping to move to a new barn soon, and the owner is very flexible as to letting you do what you want to do. I'm checking the place out this weekend.

Fanny is the opposite of your ex racer. I think she could survive on eating toilet tissue all winter and she'd still gain weight! Razz

Ah I have a few of those, my welsh cob, welsh mountain, Hw cob and my arab x welsh are all fairly good dooers, my little appy looks like she is going that way, and my id x tb gets very fat in summer but drops all her weight in winter, my ex racer doesn't ever really get fat but at least she isn't emaciated like she was when I got her.

I rent land for them, so have pretty much free rein with what I do with them, I don't think I could have as many as I do if I was in a livery yard, hopefully moving to a house with own land though, so I can have them next to me, that will make everything a lot easier.

Hello! Empty Feed

Post by Meg Fri Sep 19, 2008 3:46 am

Hello Wyrdhorses,
I'm interested in what feed you give your ex racer to keep weight on?
Mine loses weight in the winter and last year I gave him UNMOLASSD sugerbeet and he turned into a total nutcase on it Shocked !!
I must admit he has got more weight on him now than he had at this time last year so he may be ok, but I'd be interested in any other suggestions for what to give him if necessary.
Thanks
Meg

I give my girl just basic chaff (Hi fi lite) and sugarbeet (normal stuff from a feed merchant or speedi beet) and then give her a scoop full of pink powder in every feed, and haylage.
She only gets fed once a day, with a scoop of sugarbeet and a scoop of chaff, but the pink powder works with her gut (which has most likely been damaged from being fed a high concentrate diet since she was young) and helps her utilise her feed more. She couldn't have haylage before going on the pink powder as it made her loose, but shes great when she's on it. She also gets biotin and magnesium in her feed to help with her feet, but I am hoping to do away with that when she gets access to a hard track all year round.

This year I am looking at grass nuts for them. Last year I found a great feed by top spec called fibre plus, all my horses love it. My arab x welsh can't eat chaff because of his dust/pollen allergy (for some reason it makes him cough? confused ) so he has to have soaked feed, and he is not a huge fan of sugarbeet, so I have to find alternatives for him, this year I may just put oats in the sugarbeet for him if I can't get my hands on decent priced grass nuts, and just give my welsh cob, who has tooth problems, sugarbeet, as she will eat anything, lol.

Welcome Tasha!

Wow, 7! I struggle with my 1! Do all of them work, or are any retired/companion-types? Mine lives out all winter, I can't imagine what it must be like to have to muck out 7 all season long Shocked Sounds like you've got a fabulous mix of breeds, they must be such an education.

What degree are you doing?

2 of my girls are retired now, my TB and my ID xTB. My TB just because she told me she didn't want to work so much anymore and my IDxTB as she had an injury to the back of her foot.
I have one that is a yearling, and it looks like my Welsh A is going to be a lady of leisure also as she has developed throughpins on her hocks.
The other 3 are in work.

It's interesting watching how the horses react to each other, especially how my yearling introduced herself into the herd, they allow her to do things the others in the herd wouldn't, I'm not sure if this is because of her dominant nature or because she is a baby.

My Degree is an equine based one, including some coaching work, I've just started my third year.
