This is an interesting and potentially very useful method, though its a shame the practitioner seems to have the wrong end of the stick about join-up, which she refers to as 'round-penning', and that she thinks natural horsemanship isn't holistic horsemanship! Though of course she may be referring to Parelli who seems to have cornered the phrase, at least in the States, to mean their training method.

I'd argue that she actually IS putting the horse under pressure, in order to move it around and that it's extremely similar to Monty Roberts' method, though with less running on the part of the horse, and that she DOES cause fear in the horse when she waves her arms at it. I'd also point out that that's what a lead mare would do - if the young horse didn't have a 'fear' (concern, anxiety - might be getting bogged down in semantics here!) of the consequences of not responding to the lead mare, she wouldn't be the lead mare.
Her talk of 'tapping' the horse harder and harder with a whip was a bit though!

I think I agree with 99% of that video, except I would say she's still using too much pressure.
I don't think she means anything good you might have seen when she says 'round penning', I've seen horses run to a standstill in round pens to get them to 'join up'
Also I don't think she's causing any fear at all. If you create fear in a horse you can't do anything with it. Any good parent knows you can discipline a child and make it pay attention without frightening it, and that's what she's doing to the colt. My mother used to slap my legs when I was naughty as a child, but I was never scared of her.
I would say I do a lot of what she does, but I'm trying to get rid of the pressure part altogether. I agree 'tapping harder and harder' is not the best way! My teacher says, if the horse doesn't understand when you ask quietly, is it going to understand any better when you SHOUT?

I finally watched the video. It is very thought-provoking!

I'm finding that many trainers use similar styles or methods (even if they are ever-so-slightly different), yet they call it by another name. It makes me think that just about any gentle way of training will work with a horse. I don't think that any one trainer is perfect or 100% right in how they do things, but we certainly benefit when we can take bits and pieces that we like from different trainers and still use it to gently train our horses. I'm thankful for all the gentle trainers out there who have so much to offer us. At one time, it would've been hard to find someone who didn't beat the horse into submission or break its spirit. Instead, we can now find support and direction in how to be a partner with our horses

The fear thing...I suppose it depends on the horse. If you have a flighty horse, they may react to certain body language more fearfully than a bold horse. Perhaps that's a call you'd have to make with each individual horse you work with, then adjust your degree of 'pressure' accordingly. At the end of the day, if the horse is happy, having fun, learning, and wants to be with you, I guess a person's done okay
